about

Here’s something different. In November 2017 my friend and fellow musician Matthew Grimson asked me to help him improvise some recorded music at the studio run by our pal Charles Austin. This is what came out of that one-afternoon session.

Starting with a phone recording Matthew had made of his feet shuffling along a gravel trail, Charles then recorded him speaking and singing phrases from a notebook of lyrical ideas he’d brought in. I played some piano, Matthew sang some more of his poetry, and we added other spare instrumentation. A couple of hours later, we had the three pieces here. No second takes, and it all got used.

Though brief, that session felt like the most productive and creative time I’d ever spent recording. Still does. I know Matthew was happy with it too. We talked about doing a lot more together. I looked forward to our next session.

The tragic end of the story, of course, is that we never did go back in, and Matthew died about half a year later. I'm so glad to have this record of my last time with him and so disappointed that that's what it turned out to be.

I'm not charging anything for this EP because it didn't cost me anything to put together and I just want it to be out there for anyone whose ears might be looking for it. But if you feel like it's worth paying for, I will gratefully donate any proceeds to the Birdsong Foundation, a charitable group helping people with mental health issues get their music out into the world.

about

Matthew Grimson Nova Scotia

Matthew Grimson was a gifted and singular songwriter who died in 2018 at the age of 50, leaving behind an enormous body of idiosyncratic work, much of which was never released. Matthew was a unique visionary—as sensitive, uncompromising, funny, and fearless in his art as he was in his life. Of his music, Matthew wrote: “Here lay psychological metal, verbose pop, queasy balladry, and odd trips.” ... more
